Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on pain intensity in patients with chronic low back pain: a systematic review of literature
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is common musculoskeletal disorder in today’s societies, which lead to inducing chronic pain and consequently pathological changes in brain function in most of the patients. Therefore, using effective intervention for controlling chronic pain in patients with LBP is very important. According to the evidence, some studies indicated that pain intensity is decreased by application of trans-cranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the patients with CLBP. On the other hand, some studies showed that there were no significant effects on pain intensity in these patients. The aim of this study was to systematically review the studies which investigated the effects of tDCS intervention on pain intensity in patients with CLBP. Materials and Methods: The search was performed in databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, Embase, WOS, Proquest, MedLine, Scopus, Ovid, Chocrane and Science Direct with from 2000-2019. The quality of articles was assessed by Pedro scale. Results: Finally, from 177 articles, 7 articles were included in this systematic review study. The results indicated that using concurrent central and peripheral intervention or the condition of using tDCS alone was a key factor in the reporting of different findings among the included studies. The review of articles indicated that using tDCS alone has not significantly affected pain intensity, while tDCS along with peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) or training have a significant and lasting effects on pain intensity in patients with CLBP. Conclusion: TDCS along with peripheral interventions have positive and lasting effects on pain intensity in patients with CLBP. Therefore, it is suggested that tDCS will be used along with peripheral interventions to control pain intensity in patients with CLBP.

Effect of Direct Transcranial Current Stimulation on Pain Intensity of Burn Dressing
Background: Pain is of stressful and unpleasant procedures after daily dressing of burn wound, so that if the burn pain is not alleviated properly, it can cause harmful effects other than discomfort. There is evidence that cathodal stimulation of somatosensory cortex can be effective in relieving acute pain. Aim: The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Direct Transcranial ...
full textThe Effectiveness of Exercise Therapy on Improving Pain and Functional Disability in Patients with Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review of English Clinical Trials
Aims and background: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal disorders in societies that have been suggested for many therapies. Exercise therapy is one of the most widely used methods in control and treatment of chronic low back pain. The purpose of the present study is to systematically review English-language studies that have investigated the effect...

full textA comparative study of trunk proprioception between patients with chronic non-specific low back pain and discopathic low back pain
Introduction: Low back pain is one of the most common disorders in modern society. Disturbed properioception can be a possible cause of low back pain and can cause recurrence of low back pain. Previous studies have shown that low back pain reduces proprioception due to instability in the low back. Since the degenerative process of disc herniation is one of the important factors in exacerbating ...
full textEffects of Modified Pilates Exercises on Pain, Disability, and Lumbopelvic Motor Control in Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain
Background: Musculoskeletal disorders, like Low Back Pain (LBP) are associated with impaired lumbopelvic motor control. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of modified Pilates exercises on pain, disability, and lumbopelvic motor control in patients with chronic LBP. Methods: In this randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial, 30 chronic patients with chronic LBP were selec...
full textEffects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Chronic Pain in Spinal Cord Injured Patients
Introduction: Pain following spinal cord injury (SCI) is notoriously difficult to manage and often refractory to treatment. Novel approaches, such as non-invasive brain stimulation, targeting central mechanisms associated with chronic pain, have shown early promise as a safe treatment in various patient groups, including spinal cord injury. To date the number of small clinical trials using non-...
